How does a DVD work?
A DVD stores digital video and audio data in a spiral track of microscopic pits on a reflective disc surface. When inserted into a DVD player, a laser reads these pits and translates the patterns into video and audio signals that display on a connected television or monitor.
The disc is placed label-side up in the player tray or slot. The player spins the disc while the laser assembly moves across its surface, reading the encoded content from the inside edge outward.
What benefits does a DVD provide?
- Delivers higher video and audio quality than VHS tapes, with sharper images and clearer sound
- Allows instant access to specific chapters or scenes without rewinding or fast-forwarding through content
- Maintains consistent playback quality over time since the laser reads the disc without physical contact that causes wear
- Stores compactly on shelves, taking less space than VHS cassettes
