Tokaido Uniform Labels: 3 choices

September 9th, 2008

Tokaido Japan is now offering 3 different choices for labels. The Tokaido Karate Gi (uniforms) have long been available with the JKA logo on the label, as well as the Tokaido “Red Fist” Logo. ow, they have also started offering the ISKF logo. This new ISKF logo may not be available on all types of uniforms - same as the JKA logo - but is already a popular option for the Tokaido Ultimate Tournament Cut karate gi (aka kumite cut).

Not all variations are in stock, either. If you have questions, please send us a message:

3 signs you need a Freestanding Wing Chun Dummy

February 27th, 2008

When can you tell you should have gotten a Freestanding Wing Chun Dummy?

1. Your workout area is not “set in stone”
Maybe the basement works well right now, but will you be turning it into a family room next year? Best to wait and make sure before you mount that Wing Chun Dummy stand onto the wall. A freestanding wing chun dummy is also much easier to move to your next residence.

2. You live in an apartment, or otherwise share that wall
Anyone you share a wall with will HATE YOU for banging on your muk joong at 3am in a burst of inspiration. Think about folks you might share the wall with, even if they are above or below you. You wouldn’t have to use those skills next time you answer the door, would you?

3. Lack of space
In any area that lacks space, it may be nicer to have your wing chun dummy stashed away, rather than taking up a wall. On the other hand, your Mook Jung might make for the perfect design element!

5 ways to tell if your Tokaido Karate Gi is really from Japan

June 4th, 2007

There are a number of Tokaido uniforms not made in Japan. Here are a few ways to spot the original Tokaido Gi, made in Japan:

1. Is the Tokaido Gi available in Black?
Only the Tokaido Gis made in Japan come in Black. If your karate uniform supplier does not have Black available, they may not be getting their uniforms from an authentic source.

2. Is the Tokaido uniform available with the JKA logo?
Authentic Tokaido uniforms from Japan are available with the JKA logo in addition to Tokaido’s “Red Fist” logo.

3. Does the Tokaido Gi also come in Tournament Cut?
Many martial artists purchase a Tournament Cut Tokaido Gi for Kumite or Tournaments. They might save a traditional cut uniform for their karate training, or to wear when serving on belt ranking promotions.

4. Is the Tokaido Gi made from special #10 cotton?
The special number 10 cotton used in Tokaido uniforms is actaully grown in Japan under very special conditions. This cotton is what makes the uniform very comfortable, but it is also much stronger than other canvas materials. Rumor has it that the Tokaido Ultimate cotton canvas is the only canvas the Japanese government allows to use the word “Ultimate” with. This is why these uniforms last decades. They’re stronger uniforms, but you’ll enjoy wearing it.

5. Is the Tokaido Karate Gi rated as 14oz?
Surprisingly, Tokaido Japan’s uniforms are never rated as 14oz. Truly, they are a step above competitors that rate their uniforms this way. If you see “14 ounce canvas” with the karate gi details, it is probably not the authentic Karate Gi.

As you can see, purchasing a genuine authentic Tokaido Japan uniform is a little harder than you might expect. And here are a list of so-called Tokaido gi that are NOT made in Japan:
Tokaido Arashi is made in China.
Tokaido Tsunami is not made in Japan

Judo Humor

November 17th, 2006

A man walks into a bar with a dog. The bartender says, “You can’t bring that dog in here.”
“You don’t understand,” says the man. “This is no regular dog, he can talk.”
“Listen, pal,” says the bartender. “If that dog can talk, I’ll give you a hundred bucks.”
The man puts the dog on a stool, and asks him, “What’s on top of a house?”
“Roof!”

“Right. And what’s on the outside of a tree?”
“Bark!”

“And what kind of sport is Judo?”
“Rough!”

“I guess you’ve heard enough,” says the man. “I’ll take the hundred in twenties.”
The bartender is furious. “Listen, pal,” he says, “get out of here before I belt you.”
As soon as they’re on the street, the dog turns to the man and says, “Do you think I should have said ‘gentle’?”

How to buy a Wing Chun Dummy

October 25th, 2006

A Wing Chun dummy is an excellent investment in your training. Before your Wing Chun dummy purchase, however, you should consider several factors:

Freestanding Wing Chun Dummies vs Wall Mounted Wing Chun Dummies are available in Wall Mounted and Freestanding varieties. If you are renting a home or apartment, the freestanding wing chun dummy is probably right for you. With the proper amount of weight on the dummy’s base, a freestanding Wing Chun dummy will not scoot across the floor while you train. If you own your home, you could either mount the freestanding Wing Chun dummy to the floor, or get a Wall Mounted Wing Chun dummy (with stand). The stand is used to keep the Wing Chun dummy at the proper height, secured, and at some distance from your wall. MAke sure your wall mounted Wing Chun dummy comes with a stand.

PVC vs Wooden Wing Chun Dummies A second consideration with Wing Chun dummies is what materials it is made of. Many new varieties of Wing Chun Dummy are available in PVC, Steel, and even aluminum. For traditional Wing Chun practicioners, however, there is something lost except when training on a wooden Wing Chun Dummy. A PVC Wing Chun dummy might be lighter, but a wooden Wing Chun Dummy has an old world charm and traditional feel that cannot be matched by PVC. With wooden dummies available in exotic hardwoods and beautiful finishes, your wooden Wing Chun dummy can be an eye catching work of art in your home.

Measurements Wooden dummies are available for a number of styles. There are JKD dummies for Jeet Kune Do practicioners, and also Choi La Fut and Hung Gar dummies for those arts. Each type of wooden dummy has slightly different measurements, though. If you are a Wing Chun practicioner, it is important to make sure you get a Wing Chun dummy that conforms to “traditional specifications”. Most Wing Chun dummy retailers will specify that the traditional Mook Joong / Muk Jang specifications are used on their Wing Chun wooden dummy, but it is important to look out for. With a wooden Wing Chun dummy, you are also more likely to see adherence to the traditional specifications.
